Cancer

Cancer:

Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled cell division leading to growth of abnormal tissue. It is believed that cancers arise from both genetic and environmental factors that lead to aberrant growth regulation of a stem cell population, or by the dedifferentiation of more mature cell types.  Cell multiplication (proliferation) is a normal physiologic process that occurs in almost all tissues and under many circumstances, such as response to injury, immune responses, or to replace cells that have died or have been shed as a part of their lifecycle (in tissues such as skin or the mucous membranes of the digestive tract). Normally the balance between proliferation and cell death is tightly regulated to ensure the integrity of organs and tissues. Mutations in DNA that lead to cancer appear to disrupt these orderly processes.

The uncontrolled and often rapid proliferation of cells can lead to either a benign tumor or a malignant tumor (cancer). Benign tumors do not spread to other parts of the body or invade other tissues, and they are rarely a threat to life. Malignant tumors can invade other organs, spread to distant locations (metastasize) and become life threatening.

High Dose of Oxygen Enhances Cancer Treatment - LeukemiaThe compound artemisinin – isolated from Artemisia annua L, commonly known as wormwood – is a natural remedy widely used to treat malaria. In the mid-1990s UW researchers were the first to explore its ability to treat cancer. In the new study, using artemisinin or high-pressure oxygen alone on a culture of human leukemia cells reduced the cancer cells’ growth by 15 percent. Using them in combination reduced the cells’ growth by 38 percent, a 50 percent increase in artemisinin’s effectiveness.
Man Dying From Side Effect of Cancer Treatment Makes Remarkable Recovery Using Hyperbaric ChamberA Newspaper Article out of Tampa, Florida about a man dying from side effect of Cancer treatment that made a remarkable recovery using Hyperbaric Therapy.
My Success Story: Woman to Woman (Breast Cancer)An article about a woman who overcame breast cancer with the help of a portable hyperbaric chamber.
Breast Cancer Patients Benefit From Decompression Chambers Used For DiversDecompression chambers, used to treat deep-sea divers with the bends, may hold the key to relieving painful side effects of breast cancer treatment. Breathing pure oxygen in a decompression chamber could help women who have been left with lymphoedema - a painful and irreversible condition characterised by a severely swollen arm following radiotherapy.

The Use of Hyperbaric Medicine For Inoperable and Terminal Facial Cancer and TumorsOn November 2, 2003, a 71 year old male patient presented in my office with two inoperable basil cell carcinoma facial tumors - one in the right nasal area, and the other in the right lower jaw area. With the tumors growing more quickly by the day medical doctors gave the patient "less than 30 days to expire" because they suggested the tumors would soon grow into the neck area and cut off the blood and oxygen supply to the brain.

Hyperbaric Oxygen In Brain Cancer TreatmentHyperbaric oxygen is being tried out in brain cancer treatment in New York. Researchers at The Long Island Brain Tumor Center at Neurological Surgery, P.C. are examining whether the hyperbaric therapy – breathing pure oxygen while in a pressurized chamber – may prove a useful addition to the current standard of care for patients newly diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer.
HBOT’s Potential Anti-Cancer Effects on Breast Cancer CellsIn the 2007 study, Haroon, Patel, and Al-Mehdi decided to evaluate the growth of murine breast cancer cells in the lung after hyperbaric oxygen treatment in an experimental metastasis assay.
Soft Tissue Radionecrosis Pathophysiology and Hyperbaric EffectsDue to the very high oxygen concentrations achievable intravascularly with HBOT, the diffusion distance of oxygen into the tissues is increased two to three times. As a result, a much larger volume of tissue becomes oxygenated by the remaining blood vessels. The hyperoxia stimulates fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis, which provide a matrix for the development of new blood vessels into the area at a faster rate than the usual. HBOT’s main influence on tissue damaged by irradiation is angiogenesis, thereby promoting tissue healing.

Oxygen Chamber Joins Fight vs. CancerQ & A article with Dr. Christopher Duma, neurosurgeon specialist and medical director of brain and spine surgeons in the brain tumor program at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach and how he's using HBOT to treat Glioblastoma, a very aggressive brain cancer.
